At the event, a direct flight route between Ho Chi Minh City and Colombo was officially launched by Vietnam Airlines that is expected to commence operations in August 2026.

The airport expected to have a designed capacity of about 20,000 passengers per year in the 2021-2030 period.

The agreement was reached by General Secretary and President To Lam and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during their summit meeting in Colombo on May 8.
