The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has proposed adding the Can Gio International Container Transshipment Port in Ho Chi Minh City to the list of priority projects for investment.
This is part of the ministry’s draft amendments to the national Seaport System Development Master Plan in the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050.
The plan was approved by the Prime Minister in 2021 without planning for Can Gio Port, the ministry said. Meanwhile, the port was mentioned in the National Assembly’s Resolution No. 81/2023 on national technical infrastructure development orientations. The amendment to the master planning is therefore essential, it said.
Can Gio Port will be built on an area of some 571 ha on Con Cho islet in Thach An commune in Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City.
It will be designed to receive transshipment vessels of up to 65,000 tons and barges with a payload of up to 8,000 tons.
Total investment is estimated at over $5.45 billion.
