Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on June 11 hosted a reception for Mr. Bernard Fontana, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of France's energy giant EDF in Paris, on the occasion of his 5-day working visit to France to attend the third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC 3) and conduct bilateral activities, according to a report from the Government News.

During the reception, Mr. Fontana  expressed his wish to cooperate with Vietnam in developing nuclear energy, renewable energy, telecommunication, and artificial intelligence.

The Vietnamese PM welcomed EDF's proposal and asked the French energy giant to cooperate with Petrovietnam, Viettel and other Vietnamese partners in the aforesaid areas.

Regarding nuclear energy, the Prime Minister suggested EDF work with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to clarify issues such as technology, capital sources and human resource training.

The National Assembly approved the Government's proposal to restart the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project on November 30, 2024.

The project involves building two nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 400MW in the central province of NinhThuan.

The Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) has been assigned by the Government to be the investor of the project.

EDF Group is a multinational energy group operating in the fields of energy production, transmission, distribution, business, and services. The Group supplies energy and services to approximately 41.5 million customers and generated consolidated sales of €118.7 billion in 2024.

In 2025, EDF completed the construction of 715MW Phu My Thermal Power Plant - one of the first Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) power plants in Vietnam.

Earlier, In 2018, EDF was licensed to join Japanese partners, Sojitz and Kyushu, in building 2,250MW Son My 1 Power Plant, which is expected to come into commercial operation by 2030.
