The centrally-run city of Hue is stepping up efforts to attract investment and expand international air connectivity to support the effective operation of Passenger Terminal T2 at Phu Bai International Airport.

During a recent meeting with the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Standing Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, emphasized the strategic role of aviation infrastructure in the city’s economic and tourism development.

While the official opening of Terminal T2 has laid a strong foundation for enhanced connectivity,  the current volume of flights—especially international routes—falls short of expectations, he noted.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Anh Vu, Deputy General Director of ACV, and leadership from Phu Bai International Airport presented several proposals to maximize the terminal’s capacity and enhance Hue’s position within the regional aviation network.

A key focus of the discussion was the potential to establish direct international routes from Hue to major destinations such as Chengdu (China), Incheon (South Korea), and cities in Japan—all of which are important source markets for Central Vietnam’s tourism industry.

To stimulate air route development, ACV pledged support for encouraging airlines to launch new services and proposed an incentive package, including up to 50% reduction in ground service fees for the first two years and marketing assistance worth up to VND200 million (over $7,600) per new route.

Furthermore, ACV suggested strategies to promote Hue’s tourism brand through specialized aviation digital platforms, such as Routes 360, and recommended participating in leading international travel trade events like Routes World, ITB Berlin (Germany), and ITE HCMC. The corporation also proposed leveraging its sister airport network to help introduce Hue to broader markets.
