Lai Chau to seek approval from transport ministry for new airport

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has asked authorities in northern Lai Chau province to prepare planning for the construction of Lai Chau Airport and to submit plans to the ministry for appraisal and approval.

The government last year approved the Lai Chau Provincial People’s Committee studying and assessing economic and technical efficiency and its ability to mobilize investment for the project.

It submitted a document to the MoT last month on planning preparations.

Under the national master planning on the development of the airport network in the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050, Lai Chau Airport is to have a capacity of welcoming 500,000 passengers a year, which will then increase to 1.5 million by 2050.

It will cover 117 ha and have estimated investment of VND8 trillion ($337 million), in the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Provincial authorities said the project is an important growth driver in boosting socio-economic development in the province.
