Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has emphasized the need to continue maintaining macroeconomic stability, reining in inflation, and ensuring major balances in the economy.

He also called for the hastening of economic restructuring in connection with renewing the growth model as well as strengthening and promoting growth drivers for both the mid and long terms.

He made the comments in an interview with the Vietnam News Agency on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2023, or Tet, and the 93rd anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Identifying unexpected difficulties in 2022, he said the world has seen rapid, complex, unpredictable, and unprecedented developments. Vietnam has had to step up socioeconomic development and recovery and deal with the impact of Covid-19, seasonal diseases, and natural disasters.

In that context, with consensus and determination among the entire political system, the country achieved and surpassed 14 of its 15 targets.

GDP growth reached about 8 per cent in 2022, higher than the targeted 6-6.5 per cent. State budget revenue rose 20 per cent against 2021 while total investment in society increased 12.5 per cent, with $22 billion in FDI disbursed, up 16 per cent.

Total trade value went up 10 per cent year-on-year to hit a record $740 billion, helping the country remain one of the top 25 economies in terms of trade.

The Party leader said there will be more difficulties and challenges in the time to come, requiring that the country be vigilant, continue to effectively control Covid-19 and emerging epidemics, and focus resources on socioeconomic recovery and development.
