At the event, a direct flight route between Ho Chi Minh City and Colombo was officially launched by Vietnam Airlines that is expected to commence operations in August 2026.
The agreement was reached by General Secretary and President To Lam and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during their summit meeting in Colombo on May 8.
The visit is expected to mark a new milestone in bilateral relations, opening up opportunities for breakthroughs in economic, trade, and investment cooperation, and contributing to effectively responding to rapid changes in the global political and economic landscape.
At the third meeting of the Vietnam–Sri Lanka Joint Sub-Committee on Trade, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation across a wide range of economic areas in the coming times.
The Sri Lankan President expressed hope for increased Vietnamese investment in Sri Lanka, particularly in agriculture, education, religion, culture, tourism, and aviation.
Vietnam exported 3.5 million tons of rice worth $1.7 billion in the first half of 2022, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, up 16.2 per cent in volume and 4.6 per cent in value over the same period of 2021. Growth came from high demand in markets such as China, Bangladesh, Iran, and Sri Lanka.
