The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration a plan to build the Can Gio International Container Transshipment Port in the southern city’s Can Gio district.
Under the proposed plan, the port will be built on an area of some 571 ha on Con Cho islet in Thach An commune.
It will be designed to receive transshipment vessels of up to 65,000 tons and barges with a payload of up to 8,000 tons.
Total investment is estimated at over $5.45 billion.
The port is assessed as having many competitive advantages to attract international cargo from countries in the region such as Cambodia, Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, and China, according to the municipal People’s Committee.
Some 6,000-8,000 jobs are expected to be created from the project.
