Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son on October 21 received Ms. Ghada Waly, UN Under-Secretary-General and Director-General/Executive Director of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV)/United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), who is on a working visit to Vietnam to attend the Opening for the Signature of the UN Convention against Cybercrime (Hanoi Convention).
The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed Vietnam's unwavering support for multilateralism and viewed international cooperation as a crucial solution to address global challenges.
He highly appreciated the role of the United Nations and UNODC in assisting countries in combating transnational crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and human trafficking.
Building on the strong cooperative relationship established over time, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed a desire for both parties to enhance their collaboration more substantively, focusing on specific programs and projects. He also thanked UNODC for its close cooperation in preparing and organizing the opening ceremony of the International Convention against Cybercrime, hosted by Vietnam, and requested continued support from the organization to ensure the Convention is signed, ratified, and effectively implemented by member countries.
The Deputy Prime Minister stated that Vietnam supports UNODC's programs aimed at helping developing countries enhance their capacity to implement the Convention. He also welcomed the initiative to establish a Regional Cybersecurity Capacity Building Center in the Asia-Pacific region, considering it a step in line with new cooperation trends. In addition to cybersecurity, the Deputy Prime Minister praised the cooperation in drug prevention between the two parties within the bilateral and Mekong sub-regional frameworks. He requested UNODC to consider supporting Vietnamese ministries and sectors in effectively implementing the National Target Program on Drug Prevention.
Ms. Ghada Waly, for her part, commended Vietnam's strong commitment to combating crime, particularly cybercrime, drug trafficking, and money laundering. She welcomed Vietnam's hosting of the opening ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, a significant step in protecting global cyberspace, and acknowledged Vietnam's efforts in the preparation process.
According to Ms. Ghada Waly, following the signing ceremony, UNODC will continue to work closely with Vietnam to encourage countries to ratify and implement the Convention promptly. She also expressed support for Vietnam's initiative to establish a regional training center on cybercrime prevention and affirmed UNODC's readiness to cooperate in the implementation process.
The UN Under-Secretary-General affirmed that UNODC would maintain close cooperation with Vietnam and expand exchanges with countries in the region to enhance the effectiveness of crime prevention initiatives and develop new programs suitable for the global context.
