Following the collapse of the Phong Chau bridge on September 9 due to rising Red River water levels, the Prime Minister has called for immediate studies and investment in a new bridge.

The bridge, located on National Highway 32C between Lam Thao and Tam Nong districts in northern Phu Tho province, is a vital link across the Red River. Its collapse has caused significant disruptions to local life, property damage, and traffic flow.

Prime Ministerial Official Dispatch No 96/CD-TTg, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on September 16,  emphasized the urgent need for a new bridge that can withstand extreme weather conditions.

Under the Official Dispatch, the Phu Tho Provincial People's Committee has been tasked with conducting studies, surveys, and preparing investment procedures for the new bridge, with a report due by October 1.

Relevant ministries, including transport, agriculture and rural development, planning and investment, and finance, are required to collaborate with Phu Tho authorities in expediting investment preparations, securing necessary funds, and submitting a joint report to the Prime Minister by September 20.

The new bridge is expected to be 430 m long, 21.5 m wide, and cost a total  of VND865 billion ($35 million) from the State budget.
