Increasing transportation demand for coal has overloaded the La Hay border gate in Quang Tri province.

The Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee has proposed the construction of a cross-border coal conveyor to bring coal from Laos to Vietnam via the La Hay international border gate.

The section of the conveyor in Vietnam will stretch 75 km through the central region, starting from La Hay and running to the My Thuy Seaport in Hai Lang district, while the section in Laos will be 85 km and run from coal mines to La Hay.

Investment for the Vietnam section is estimated at VND10.8 trillion ($460 million).

The coal conveyor is designed to transport 15-20 million tons of coal from Laos to Vietnam each year.

Demand for coal transported from Laos via the Quang Tri border for export to Vietnam and to third countries through Vietnam’s seaports is estimated at 20-30 million tons a year.
