Vietnam is channeling its efforts into chip lines that cater to practical applications such as drones, agriculture, surveying, and other industries. This market holds significant potential and aligns well with Vietnam's current capabilities.
Mr. Nguyen Khac Lich, General Director of the Ministry of Information and Communications’ ICT Industry and Communications, emphasizes the importance of mastering semiconductor technology.
He asserted that a country that is unable to master this technology will face substantial challenges in developing and safeguarding its technological infrastructure. A disruption in the semiconductor supply chain can have profound and difficult-to-recover impacts, given the dependency of modern technology systems on semiconductors.
In light of this, Vietnam is striving to establish its presence on the global semiconductor map, he said, adding that in a fierce competition in terms of financial and technical resources from global Big Tech companies, Vietnam is charting its own course. Accordingly, instead of pursuing cutting-edge technologies that require immense resources and intense competition, Vietnam is focusing on widely applicable and popular technologies.
From a business standpoint, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, Director of Innovation & Technology Development at Sovico Group, saw a promising opportunity for Vietnam in the development and manufacture of specialized chips.
"Instead of competing with giants like TSMC in producing advanced 2nm or 7nm chips—endeavors that demand massive resources and incur high costs—we can focus on high-quality chip lines serving practical applications in areas like drone equipment, agriculture, and surveying. This market is highly potential and well-suited to Vietnam's current capabilities," Mr. Cuong affirmed.
Mr. Tran Phu Son, Business Development Director of FPT Semiconductor at FPT Corporation, noted that FPT is currently engaged in various projects within the semiconductor industry. The team is involved in all stages of product development, from design to production. Collaboration among experts from diverse fields ensures the creation of comprehensive products that meet complex market requirements. Consequently, flexible and diverse personnel training programs are crucial to equip students with a foundation adaptable to various roles within the industry, according to him.
