Some 42 cross-border service providers from the US, the Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong (China), Ireland, Lithuania, Switzerland, Australia, and elsewhere have registered, declared, and paid taxes via the portal of the General Department of Taxation for foreign providers, at https://etaxvn.gdt.gov.vn/nccnn/Request, since it was put in place on March 21.
More than VND3.444 trillion ($146 million) has been collected, in which foreign providers without permanent establishments in Vietnam contributed nearly VND1.9 trillion ($81 million) via the portal and the remainder from their authorized partners in Vietnam. Facebook and Google have paid VND1.748 trillion ($74 million) and VND979 billion ($42 million), respectively.
Among them are six major providers: Meta (Facebook), Google, Microsoft, TikTok, Netflix, and Apple, which account for up to 90 per cent of market share in cross-border e-commerce, according to the General Department of Taxation (GDT).
The GDT said Vietnam is one of the four leading ASEAN countries in operating an electronic portal for foreign suppliers to declare and pay taxes.
With 70.7 per cent of the population engaging in online shopping, the total value of Vietnam’s digital economy reached $21 billion in 2021.
Head of the GDT’s Tax Agency for Large Businesses, Mr. Nguyen Bang Thang, said the portal is an advanced digital-based tax management tool that helps improve the legal compliance of foreign service providers.
