Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan stated that nuclear power is essential for ensuring energy security and achieving Net Zero targets. However, he emphasized the need for advanced technology to ensure absolute safety and minimize risks.

The deputy minister made such a statement at a monthly press briefing held on October 23.

Mr. Tan mentioned that the ministry is reevaluating the feasibility of the nuclear power project in south central Ninh Thuan province, as directed by the Government and in line with Power Development Plan 8. He acknowledged the importance of base-load power, including nuclear power, in the context of renewable energy development.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bui Quoc Hung, Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Electricity and Renewable Power Authority, said that Vietnam had been researching the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project since 2009 but suspended it due to various challenges.

However, given positive domestic and global conditions, the Government has directed the ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology to study international experiences in nuclear power development, Mr. Hung said.

He added that the ministry will thoroughly research and evaluate solutions for nuclear power development and propose adjustments in Power Development Plan 8.
