The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has decided to establish an appraisal council for the planning of the Can Gio Sea Encroachment Project in Can Gio district.

The project received approval from the Prime Minister in 2020 and investment of over VND217 trillion ($9.15 billion).

It will be developed in coastal Long Hoa commune and Can Thanh town on an area of 2,870 ha by the Can Gio Tourism Urban Area Joint Stock Company.

Ho Chi Minh City plans to turn Can Gio district into an ecological urban area as part of efforts to urbanize the area and improve quality of life.

The city issued a resolution last September on development orientations for Can Gio district to 2030, under which it will develop into a high quality eco-tourism city.

Since Can Gio was recognized by UNESCO as a Mangrove Biosphere Reserve in 2020, the number of tourists has increased rapidly, from 500,000 in 2010 to nearly 2 million in 2019.
