The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho exported the first batch of two tons of green-peel elephant mango (Mangifera Indica) to Australia and the US on June 18, the Lao Dong (Labor) online newspaper has reported.

Vice Chairman of the city’s People’s Committee Nguyen Ngoc He said the city has focused on building key and high-quality fruit growing areas. Many agricultural products of the city have been exported to demanding markets.

The exports demonstrated the improvement of the local agricultural sector in meeting market demand, he said.

Can Tho city currently has 3,376 ha of mango area, with output estimated at 17,500 tons. Green-peel elephant mangoes account for 47% of the total cultivation area.

Vietnam has about 115,000 ha of mangoes with an output of around 1 million ton a year.

Vietnam is the 13th largest mango producer in the world and Vietnamese mangoes have been exported to 40 countries and territories in the world.
