The Cau Gie - Ninh Binh Expressway will be expanded from four to six lanes to cater to rising transport use, according to the Ministry of Transport.

More than a decade after being put into operation, the number of vehicles using the expressway has increased remarkably.

It served 21 million vehicles in 2023, a year-on-year increase of over 7 per cent.

In March last year, the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) proposed expanding a section of the expressway from Dai Xuyen to Liem Tuyen, at a cost of VND512 billion ($21.3 million).

The 50-km Cau Gie - Ninh Binh Expressway (first phase) was approved by the Prime Minister in 2005. Total investment was over VND8.97 trillion ($373 million).

It was put into operation in July, 2012.
