Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has approved the investment policy for upgrading Con Dao Airport for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision extending to 2050.

This decision is based on the feasibility report submitted by the People's Committee of southern Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.

Under the Deputy Prime Minister's direction, the Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provincial People's Committee, is tasked with researching and developing the overall and detailed  upgradding plans for the airport on Con Dao island. These plans are to be submitted to the Prime Minister in the second quarter of 2025.

Previously, the Provincial People's Committee had proposed a plan to upgrade and expand Con Dao Airport to meet international airport standards, to be invested in the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The proposal includes comprehensive investment in the entire project, covering airfield facilities, air traffic management facilities, essential civil aviation facilities, and aviation service facilities. Upon updating, the airport will be capable of accommodating large, wide-body aircraft such as Airbus A320, A321, and A350, and Boeing 787.

According to the National Master Plan for the Development of the Airport System for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Con Dao Airport is projected to have a capacity of approximately 2 million passengers per year by 2030, and around 3 million passengers per year by 2050.
