Construction of the Gia Binh International Airport project kicked off in northern Bac Ninh province on August 19, a dual-use facility designed to become a major aviation hub in northern Vietnam.
Covering nearly 1,960 hectares across the communes of Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Nhan Thang, and Lam Thao, the airport is being developed in line with environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.
In its first phase, to be completed by 2030, the airport will feature two runways with capacity to handle about 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually.
Post-2030 expansion plans call for four runways, enabling the airport to serve up to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo each year.
The project also sets ambitious quality benchmarks. By 2029, the airport aims to secure a four-star Skytrax rating, with a five-star rating targeted by 2032. By 2037, it is expected to rank among the world’s 10 most beautiful and passenger-friendly airports.
Gia Binh International Airport is slated to begin partial operations by the end of 2026, in time to serve activities during the APEC Summit in 2027.
