Da Nang City plans its urban railway system to include 16 lines with a total length of 294 km, connecting important locations in the city, according to a report from Radio the Voice of Vietnam.
Initially, the city prioritizes investment in two lines: one connecting Da Nang Airport - Hoi An - Tam Ky - Chu Lai, and another connecting Da Nang station of the country's projected North-South high-speed railưay to the city's central urban railway station.
This information was released at the seminar "Building Da Nang's Urban Railway System: Vision, Challenges, and Sustainable Solutions," held on October 24.
According to experts, urban railway is a large-scale infrastructure project requiring thorough preparation, systematic investment, and sustainable operation.
Dr. Nguyen Quoc Hien, Deputy Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, emphasized that the planning phase is extremely important and must be meticulously prepared. Urban railway transportation planning must be synchronized with urban planning.
Regarding operational experience, he said, urban railway operating staff must be recruited and trained at least 2 to 3 years before the system is put into use.
The experience of major cities worldwide such as Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, etc., shows that urban railways are a key factor in shaping modern, sustainable urban development, reducing traffic congestion and emissions, while also opening up new spaces connected to commercial centers, tourism, and other services.
Mr. Le Quang Nam, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, said that after merging with the former Quang Nam province, the city's urban development space expanded but also faced increasing pressure on urban traffic.
Da Nang needs to make significant breakthroughs in developing smart public transportation infrastructure, he said.
With a long-term vision, Da Nang identifies urban railway as a backbone of the smart transportation network connecting the inner city with neighboring urban areas, extending links with Hue city, Quang Ngai province, and other provinces in the Central and Central Highlands regions, forming a regional economic integration.
"Da Nang City clearly defines that the urban railway is not just a transportation project but a strategic and breakthrough decision, a foundation for forming a smart, green, connected, and regionally spreading urban area," said Mr. Nam. "This is the goal of building a multi-modal, smart transportation system, contributing to urban development oriented towards public transport, making Da Nang a green and ecological transportation city."
