The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has asked agencies to pilot the use of level 2 electronic identification (VneID) authentication for air passengers on domestic flights at airports nationwide from June 1 to August 1.
The use of data stored in the VNeID app to verify passenger identity during check-in and security screening was successfully tested at Cat Bi, Van Don, Phu Bai, and Noi Bai airports.
With a level 2 identity account, a person’s driver’s license, vehicle registration, health insurance card, payment of various electronic bills, financial transactions, government services, and online public services are all integrated. In addition, a level 2 identity account is equivalent to a chip-based ID.
Passengers who join the pilot voluntarily will show their VneID, which could replace the plastic ID card or other travel documents presented to airline staff at check-in and boarding.
In the long term, the CAAV has proposed that passenger verification uses both VneID and biometric authentication.
Data on the trial will be collected and reported to the CAAV every 15 days to address any emerging issues.
