Authorities in the northern port city of Hai Phong have increased inspections and supervision to prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing as part of Vietnam’s efforts to have the European Commission (EC)’s “yellow card” warning on IUU fishing removed as soon as possible.
The city’s People’s Committee issued a plan in March to set up three delegations to regularly inspect fishing activities.
As of April, some 887 local fishing vessels were registered on the Vietnam Fisheries database (VNFishbase) and were granted fishing licenses and had cruise monitoring equipment installed.
The city targets all local fishing vessels being registered, in possession of fishing licenses, and having cruise monitoring equipment installed, and to update data on all fishing vessels on VNFishbase.
An inspection team from the EC will visit Vietnam to examine the country’s efforts on IUU fishing prevention and control in October, instead of May, as had been previously announced.
