Mekong Delta to develop eight agricultural wholesale centers

Eight agricultural wholesale centers will be developed throughout the Mekong Delta by 2025 under an action plan to implement a master plan on the development of the region in the 2021-2030 period with a vision towards 2050.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has signed a decision to issue the action plan, which will build a roadmap to effectively implement programs and projects to fulfill targets and tasks set in the master plan.

The master plan was approved by the Prime Minister in February 2022.

The agricultural centers will be built in Can Tho city and An Giang, Dong Thap, Kien Giang, Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, and Ben Tre provinces.

By 2030, the action plan will focus on completing wholesale agricultural centers in connection with the development of transport infrastructure and promoting human resources training, agricultural technology transfer, and trade and logistics services, and connecting markets with farm produce.

Measures will be taken to enhance the application of science and technology in agriculture and improve the quality of agriculture, forestry, and fishery products in the region and build concentrated raw material areas to allow for traceability of product origin to meet requirements in both domestic and foreign markets.

The master plan aims to promote the strength of the local agricultural economy towards sustainability and technology application, and make effective use of free trade agreements to expand markets.

Investment will be poured into the construction and upgrade of highways, national roads, airports, seaports, passenger port clusters, and clusters of inland waterway cargo ports.

Attention will be also paid to promoting the export of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries products and chemical and mechanical products serving agriculture, and developing hi-tech and information technology applied-industries and clean and renewable energy.

The Mekong Delta is looking to become an international brand for agro - rural tourism, ecotourism, and maritime tourism.
