General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and State President To Lam and his spouse arrived in Guangzhou city, Guangdong province, on August 18 morning, starting a state visit to China.

The three-day visit is made at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and President of China Xi Jinping and his spouse.

Party General Secretary and State President Lam had a meeting with Secretary of the Party Committee of Guangdong province Huang Kunming and the provincial Party Committee’s Standing Committee in Guangzhou.

The Party chief arrived in Beijing later on the same day.

China is the first country Party General Secretary and State President Lam visits after he was elected as  Party General Secretary on August 3.

China is Vietnam's largest trading partner, largest import market and second largest export market. Total bilateral trade turnover reached $171.9 billion in 2023 and $112.6 billion in the first seven months of this year. Meanwhile, China's direct investment capital poured into Vietnam stood at $4.47 billion and $1.52 billion, respectively, in 2023 and in the seven-month period.
