The upgrade will enable the airport to cater to Code E aircraft such as Boeing 777, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350.

The People’s Committee of central Quang Tri province has proposed the Ministry of Construction to upgrade Quang Tri airport to make it capable of accommodating larger aircrafts, helping to promote international connection and development of the north-central region.

The committee proposed to upgrade the airport to Level 4E to increase its capacity to handle large aircraft such as Boeing 777, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350.

The upgrade will be included in the national airport development plan for the 2021-2030 period with a vision towards 2050.

Under the initial plan, Quang Tri Airport will be a Level 4C one, according to the classifications of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and can cater to Code E aircraft.

Construction of the airport is underway in Gio Quang and Gio Mai communes (Gio Linh district), covering over 265 ha. The total investment for the project, spanning two phases, amounts to over VND5.83 trillion ($224.4 million).

Upon completion, the airport is expected to accommodate up to 5 million passengers and handle 25,500 tons of cargo, annually.

The airport is scheduled to be put into operation in July, 2026.
