Hundreds of thousands of students have benefited from Suntory PepsiCo’s unwavering focus on water conservation

With a philosophy of “Growing for Good”, Suntory group and the Suntory PepsiCo are dedicated to creating activities that promote water conservation, which is a key pillar of sustainable development. Among these, the Mizuiku program is an educational initiative to raise awareness on water conservation that the Suntory  has implemented in Japan since 2004. With a desire to expand the program to contribute to the countries where it operates, Vietnam was chosen by Suntory to be the first country outside of Japan to expand the program, in 2015.

Speaking about why Vietnam was chosen, Mr. Masaaki Fujiwara, Chief Sustainability Officer at Suntory group, said it has been identified as a key market for the company. The mission of the Suntory PepsiCo strategic alliance between Suntory Corporation (Japan) and PepsiCo Corporation (US) in Vietnam was not only to bring quality products to consumers but also to contribute to the Vietnamese community where they operate. Sustainable development in Vietnam is a top priority for Suntory as they develop their business and assert their position in the market.

Mizuiku has achieved impressive results and made a profound impact on the community by focusing on enhancing awareness among young Vietnamese through a series of teaching activities, meaningful practical programs, and providing equipment to support access to clean water for schools nationwide. Throughout its eight-year implementation in Vietnam, “Mizuiku - I Love Clean Water” has helped over 2.6 million citizens benefit. Over 141,000 primary school students participated in 3,728 classes on saving and preserving clean water, with 3,924 teachers and volunteers participating nationwide.

One of the key features of the “Mizuiku - I Love Clean Water” program 2023 is its emphasis on interactive and experiential activities. For example, the program will organize a nationwide competition for elementary school students to learn about information and raise awareness about protecting water resources and the environment. This competition will take place in all 63 cities and provinces in Vietnam.

The program has also signed a cooperative agreement with the Forest Protection Department at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to promote the implementation of forest experience tours. These tours will help spread the importance of forest protection among elementary school students and build a media corner to raise awareness about environmental protection for the community at national parks.

The “Mizuiku - I Love Clean Water” program’s operating model is to empower younger generation in water conservation and environmental protection. This is delivered not only through material facilities but also through knowledge, direction, and motivation. Through this program, Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam is making a positive impact on the Vietnamese community and contributing to sustainable development.
