According to the General Statistics Office, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) increased 12.12 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022 and 9.63 per cent in the first nine months. Processing and manufacturing continued to be a driving force of growth, increasing 10.69 per cent and contributing 2.74 per cent to higher added value in the economy.
The seafood industry has two key stages - farming and processing - which have become congested from environmental regulations, Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), told a meeting between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and seafood industry associations on September 21. In order for marginal productivity to not decline, the seafood sector must be of large scale and capacity, with many reputable brands, and be deeply involved in global supply chains.
The Quang Ninh Provincial People’s Committee began construction of a high-end industrial complex costing more than VND2.7 trillion ($115 million) in Quang Yen town on September 1. The People’s Committee also granted investment certificates to two projects at the complex - the Quang Yen electronics factory, invested in by SHP and Saigontel, and a factory producing spare parts for agricultural machinery invested in by the Quang Yen Manufacturing Industry Co.
With exports of $2.3 billion in the first half of 2022, Vietnam’s shrimp industry is in a position to achieve its export target of $4 billion for the year as a whole. However, difficulties in shrimp farming and reduced production have resulted in shortages of materials at processing facilities.
While the export of many agricultural and aquatic products grew strongly in the first five months of 2022, the fruit and vegetable industry has continually declined. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, localities need to encourage enterprises to invest in high technology in processing to boost the proportion of high value-added agricultural products while the Ministry will increase its support to the industry.
