The Ministry of Construction has approved an adjustment to the national airport system master plan for 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050, with Tho Chu Airport project in southern An Giang province to be added to the country’s aviation development network.

Under the revised plan, Tho Chu Airport will have investment capital estimated at around VND28.8 trillion (approximately $1.1 billion) and be designed to meet ICAO’s Category 4C standards, allowing it to handle medium-sized aircraft.

During the 2021–2030 period, the projected airport is expected to have a designed capacity of about 20,000 passengers per year. By 2050, capacity is projected to increase significantly to around 1 million passengers annually.

The project will require more than 234 hectares of land.

The ministry also adjusted the total planned land area for Vietnam’s airport system to approximately 26,025 hectares by 2030. Total investment demand for the development of the national airport network through 2030 is estimated at VND514 trillion ($19.54 billion), to be sourced from the state budget, private sector funding and other lawful capital sources.
