Exports of tuna earned revenue of $1 billion in 2022, a year-on-year increase 34 per cent, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP). This was the first time exports hit $1 billion.
Tuna products were exported to 99 markets, of which the US, the EU, members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Israel, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Russia, the Philippines, and Egypt were the largest importers, accounting for 92 per cent of total exports.
Exports to the US accounted for 44 per cent last year, earning nearly $487 million. Inflation in the country, however, significantly affected demand.
According to VASEP, Vietnam is the 14th-largest non-EU tuna supplier to France.
It forecast that exports in the first quarter of this year will be unable to maintain the 2022 performance, but markets may recover in the second half of the year.
