A project to upgrade the channel for Quy Nhon Port in south-central Binh Dinh province to accommodate vessels of up to 50,000 DWT is scheduled to start in the third quarter of this year.
Total investment is estimated at over VND700 billion ($29.3 million).
The channel will be expanded to a total length of 7 km and a width of 140 meters.
It has deteriorated due to flooding, making it difficult for large vessels to gain access to the port. Many vessels have had to move to other ports, resulting in an increase in transportation costs.
The Ministry of Transport approved the project in August 2021, with initial investment of more than VND421 billion ($17.6 million). However, last July, the Maritime Management Board proposed that the ministry adjust capital to more than VND700 billion ($29.3 million).
Construction is expected to be completed by 2026.
Quy Nhon Port is expected to handle 12.3 million tons of cargo this year.
