VBCWE Forum 2023: Gender equality in the business environment

The Vietnam Business Coalition for Women’s Empowerment (VBCWE), in cooperation with the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD), organized the VBCWE 2023 Business Forum: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - Key Elements in Sustainable ESG Development in Hanoi on June 14.

The forum was an opportunity for the VBCWE to review the results of five years of implementing Gender Diversity and Inclusion (GD&I) in private sector businesses. Business leaders and managers came together to discuss and share goals and successful practices in sustainable ESG development, highlighting the value of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D, E & I) in businesses.

In attendance were representatives from the Australian Embassy, nearly 150 business leaders, representatives from business associations and social organizations, and members of the VCBWE and VBCSD networks.

Speaking at the forum, Ms. Ha Thu Thanh, Chairwoman of the VBCWE, emphasized the role of the Coalition over the past five years. “The mission of the VBCWE is to promote the sustainable development of businesses and the business community by connecting and gathering pioneering enterprises that create and uphold the values of diverse and inclusive cultures within the business culture,” she said. “We accompany businesses in building a happy work environment through the development of a diverse and inclusive culture linked to gender equality. We spread the values of D, E & I in the workplace to the business community, inspiring and influencing changes in the perception and actions of businesses, bringing values associated with sustainable human resource development on the journey of sustainable development for businesses in Vietnam.”

“For the past four years, VBCSD-VCCI has closely cooperated with the VBCWE in organizing the Sustainable Business Assessment and Disclosure Program in Vietnam (CSI),” said Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and Chairman of the VBCSD. “The CSI program in 2023 is the third year in which we continue to include the category of ‘Pioneering Enterprises in Building and Implementing Diverse and Inclusive Culture’ in the program’s award structure. After the launch of CSI 2023 on May 31, VBCSD is coordinating with VBCWE and partner organizations to conduct training sessions and workshops on sustainable business management, linked to the development of D, E & I. From there, we hope to encourage the Vietnamese business community to catch up with the trend of sustainable development linked to this diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture, thereby building a solid foundation for sustainable business development.”

Mr. Le Nhan Tam, Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft Vietnam, provided insights and updates on trends in human resource development related to elements of D, E & I as well as opportunities and job quality for women in the era of AI technology. The specific sharing of the values that D, E & I bring to businesses was also touched on by Mr. Van Tien Thanh, CEO of the PetroVietnam Ca Mau Fertilizer Company (PVCFC), from the perspective of a listed company, and Ms. Tran Thuy Trang, Director of Human Resources and Training at Deloitte Vietnam, from the perspective of a global company.

Three businesses were honored at the forum for their efforts in promoting gender equality in the workplace and receiving global EDGE (Economic Dividends for Gender Equality) certification: PVCFC, the Phuc Khang Construction and Investment Corporation, and the Bao Minh Confectionery Company.
