Vietnam's national football team coach, Philippe Troussier, has parted ways with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) following a 3-0 home loss to Indonesia in the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers on March 26th.

The decision came after an emergency meeting between Troussier and VFF representatives. The coach did not accompany the team back to their hotel.

Despite his initial contract's validity until July 2026, sources indicate a clause allowed for termination without payout should the team fail to reach the third round of World Cup Qualifiers.

Instead of severance, the local Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper reports that VFF will provide a financial package equivalent to several months of Troussier's $60,000 monthly salary.

In a press release, Troussier thanked players, clubs, the VFF, and fans, apologizing for not meeting expectations. The VFF acknowledged his contributions, wishing him well, even amidst public outcry for his immediate departure.

Troussier signed on to lead the national team and U-23 squad in March 2023, having previously worked with Vietnam's under-19 team and as Sporting Director of the PVF Football Academy.

Unfortunately, his tenure as national team coach was marked by a disappointing record of 11 losses in 14 games, including seven consecutive defeats leading up to his departure.

Under Troussier, Vietnam secured only one win in the 2026 World Cup qualifying round. His U23 team also suffered a 2-3 defeat to Indonesia in the SEA Games 32 semi-finals in May 2023.
