The consensus was highlighted during the Myanmar-Vietnam Business Forum which was held in Hanoi on September 6, with the attendance of Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang.
The event took place as part of the Myanmar leader’s official visit to Vietnam between September 4-6.
Speaking at the forum, President Min Aung Hlaing described the gathering as a vital opportunity to solidify bilateral friendship while propelling trade and investment. Since establishing diplomatic ties on May 28, 1975, the two nations have broadened cooperation from politics and diplomacy to encompass security, defense, and economics.
Economic and commercial ties demonstrate substantial potential, with Vietnam currently ranking among Myanmar’s key trading partners. Bilateral trade turnover reached over $510 million in the 2025-2026 period. Vietnam also stands as a major foreign investor in Myanmar, registering more than $2.53 billion in total capital across over 30 active projects.
President Min Aung Hlaing cited Mytel - a joint venture involving Vietnam's telecom group Viettel that commenced operations in 2018- as a hallmark of successful bilateral investment and technological collaboration. He noted that Mytel currently plays a crucial role in Myanmar’s telecommunications sector.
Looking ahead, Myanmar wants Vietnamese enterprises to leverage regional trade agreements and deepen partnerships in agricultural processing, cold storage, logistics, food, seafood, and agricultural inputs, thereby integrating further into the global food value chain.
The Myanmar leader also called for Vietnamese investment in digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital transformation, public services, information technology, and digital payment systems. Furthermore, he encouraged Vietnamese tech firms to participate in manufacturing equipment within Myanmar’s high-tech parks to foster an innovative business environment.
Affirming Myanmar’s commitment, President Min Aung Hlaing pledged optimal support and favorable conditions for Vietnamese projects, designating the enhancement of bilateral trade and investment as a top national priority.
He expressed confidence that the two business communities will continue expanding cooperation based on mutual respect and technological application, delivering tangible benefits to the people of both nations.
