Many fruit exporters have ceased or curbed operations during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Vietnam’s new government is having to resolve the difficult issue of achieving the “dual goals” of pandemic prevention and socio-economic development.

Trade between Vietnam and the EU has increased significantly under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), reaching $27 billion in the first half of this year, an increase of more than 18 per cent compared to the first half of last year.

Despite a decline in domestic consumption amid Covid-19, Vietnam’s motor car imports remained high in July, at 17,000 units worth more than $332 million, bringing total imports in the first seven months of the year to nearly 100,000 units worth $2.17 billion, an increase of 116.9 per cent in volume and 111.4 per cent in value over the same period last year.

Vietnam’s index of industrial production (IIP) rose just 1.8 per cent in July compared to June and 2.2 per cent year-on-year due to Covid-19.

While inspecting Ho Chi Minh City on July 29, State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked that city authorities continue to implement social distancing to control Covid-19, while adopting synchronous measures to protect people’s lives and minimize the fatality rate.
