The 13th Party Central Committee convened in Hanoi on March 20 to deliberate on President Vo Van Thuong's request to resign from his positions and cease working.
Mr. Thuong, a member of the Politburo, the 13th Party Central Committee, President of Vietnam, and Chairman of the Council of National Defence and Security for the 2021-2026 tenure, has long been considered a significant leader within the Party and the State, having risen through the ranks from grassroots levels.
However, reports from the Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission and relevant agencies revealed that Mr. Thuong had breached regulations governing Party members and guidelines on the conduct expected of officials, particularly those holding high-ranking positions within the Party structure.
His actions have sparked negative public sentiment, tarnishing not only the Party and State's reputation but also his own personal standing.
Recognizing his obligations to the Party, State, and people, Mr. Thuong has tendered his resignation from the positions entrusted to him.
In accordance with Party and State regulations and respecting Mr. Thuong's decision, the Party Central Committee has accepted his resignation from the roles of Politburo member, member of the Secretariat, and member of the Party Central Committee for the 13th tenure, as well as from the positions of President of Vietnam and Chairman of the Council of National Defence and Security for the 2021-2026 tenure.
The Party Central Committee has tasked the Politburo with overseeing the necessary procedural steps as per regulations.
