ABB celebrated its 30th anniversary of operations in Vietnam on September 6 at its Electrification Distribution Solutions Factory in northern Bac Ninh province.
It has played a significant role in advancing Vietnam’s manufacturing sector over the three decades, and been involved in four main sectors: Electrification, Robotics and Discrete Automation, Motion, and Industrial Automation, with a strong presence through five facilities around the country.
“Throughout its 30-year journey, ABB has partnered with Vietnam by providing advanced electrical and automation technology to key industrial projects like the Dung Quat Oil Refinery, the Nui Phao mining project, Cao Son Mine, major factories in industries such as steel, paper, chemicals, and food, as well as in healthcare,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Vinh Phu, General Manager of ABB in Vietnam.
The increasing demand for electricity in Vietnam is driven by factors such as the growing power use in sectors like data centers and electric vehicles as well as rapid economic development and urbanization. This necessitates a more efficient utilization of natural resources, replacing them with clean energy. The solutions to address these challenges in Vietnam’s pursuit of sustainability have been identified as digitization, innovation, and smart manufacturing.
One of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital economies, Vietnam is addressing challenges such as urbanization, the digitalization of production, renewable energy adoption, and climate change mitigation and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. ABB is actively cooperating with customers to support these goals, focusing on emerging trends in electricity, electric vehicles, and digital data to enhance competitiveness and sustainability.
“ABB is very focused on sustainability, with a comprehensive program covering our commitments to customers, our products, our factories, our suppliers, our partners, and our facilities,” said Mr. Madhav Joshi, Local Division Manager at ABB Automation & Electrification Vietnam.
He added that sustainability is an integral part of the Swiss giant’s design process and operations, in what it does in production and what it provides to customers. It is not a one-time effort, he explained, it is a continuous effort and is a priority for ABB.
Mr. Doan Van Hien, Vice President and APAC F&B Regional Segment Manager at ABB Vietnam and APAC Region, said ABB has worked with domestic partners to build value chains and drive mutually-beneficial growth over the course of its three decades in Vietnam. “ABB remains committed to being a trusted partner, accompanying Vietnam on its sustainable development journey in the decades to come,” he said.
In addition to business activities, ABB also recognizes the significance of human resources and technical training in advancing Vietnam’s sustainable economic growth in the digital era. It has pioneered cooperation with leading universities in Vietnam such as the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the Hanoi University of Industry, RMIT University, Ton Duc Thang University, and the Ho Chi Minh City National University to enhance the quality of workforce training and cultivate future engineers capable of addressing upcoming challenges.
After three decades of operations in Vietnam, ABB has established headquarters and a Robotics and Automation Solution Center in Ho Chi Minh City, a representative office in Hanoi, and the Electrical Distribution Solution Factory and a Technical Service Center for Robotics in Bac Ninh.
Last year, ABB opened its $6 million manufacturing hub for electrical distribution solutions in Bac Ninh, which is set to bolster the country’s rapid industrial growth. With Vietnam one of Asia’s fastest-growing energy markets, the government expects power consumption to rise 10-12 per cent annually to 2030.
