Rosatom's Fuel Division and Vietnam National Industry-Energy Group (Petrovietnam) on September 9 signed an agreement on a project to establish an additive manufacturing center in Vietnam.

The document exchange ceremony was witnessed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and General Secretary, President To Lam during the latter's state visit to Russia from September 7-9.

The agreement marks a new step in technological cooperation between the two sides. Additive manufacturing technology, more commonly known as 3D printing, is intended to be applied directly to the production, maintenance and repair needs of the fuel and energy sector.

Under the agreement, Rosatom and Petrovietnam agreed on a list of equipment and a delivery schedule for the establishment of a fully functional 3D printing center in Vietnam.

Rosatom will provide 3D printers manufactured by its Fuel Division. In addition to 3D printing systems, the center will be equipped with facilities for heat treatment, mechanical processing, laboratory analysis and other processes required for additive manufacturing.

Additive manufacturing is expanding beyond high-tech fields such as nuclear energy and aerospace into healthcare and manufacturing.

Another provision of the agreement involves establishing conditions for the production of metal powders in Vietnam. This is an important factor because the quality and availability of input materials play a decisive role in determining the quality and scalability of additive manufacturing.

The two sides are expected to cooperate in technical training and information exchange, as well as in developing quality standards, capability assessment procedures and product certification.
