Global semiconductor product packaging and test services provider Amkor Technology opened a semiconductor plant in northern Bac Ninh province on October 11, the Government News has reported.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang and leaders from Amkor.

The Amkor Technology Vietnam plant has total investment of $1.6 billion and covers some 23 ha at the Yen Phong II-C Industrial Park.

It is expected to create 2,000 jobs.

The plant will deliver advanced system-in-package modules and other packaging solutions.

This is the second semiconductor plant in the northern region, following the first invested in Bac Giang by the Hana Micron Group.

The government has paid great attention to the development of the semiconductor industry. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked relevant ministries and agencies to develop a human resources development master plan with the aim of training 50,000 engineers for the industry by 2030.

Vietnam has set up the National Innovation Center (NIC) and three high-tech industrial parks in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang, which are ready to welcome global investors in the sector.
