The conference "Vietnam officially joins the global index basket – FTSE Russell Global Equity Index Series" (FTSE GEIS) held in Hanoi on September 18 evening, marking Vietnam's official entry into the FTSE GEIS emerging market index, as the upgrade of its stock market  from a frontier market to a secondary emerging market according to FTSE Russell's classification, will officially take effect on September 21, 2026.

Speaking at the conference, Ms. Fiona Bassett, CEO of FTSE Russell, emphasized: This is a historic event.

"Today is an occasion for us to recognize and celebrate Vietnam's achievement of an important milestone in the development of its capital market," Ms. Fiona Bassett stressed.

According to the CEO of FTSE Russell, the change in market classification cannot happen overnight. This is the result of many years of commitment, cooperation, and persistent effort. Achievements like today reflect the collective contributions of government agencies, regulatory bodies, stock exchanges, securities companies, custodians, investors, and many other components in Vietnam's financial ecosystem. For FTSE Russell, this journey is built on many years of constructive collaboration and open dialogue with market participants. FTSE Russell greatly values the trust, partnership, and spirit of cooperation that have fostered exchanges throughout this time.

"And we are proud not only of the partnerships that have been built but also of the friendships that have formed along this journey. Vietnam's inclusion in global benchmark indices is an important recognition of the country's progress as well as Vietnam's increasingly deep integration into the global capital market," the representative of FTSE Russell emphasized.

According to Ms. Fiona Bassett, this also reinforces Vietnam's position as an increasingly important destination for international investment flows, while reflecting global investors' confidence in the future prospects of the Vietnamese market.

FTSE Russell is proud to support Vietnam in this important milestone of the capital market development process and in the phase, she said.

Currently, over $22 trillion in assets globally are benchmarked to FTSE Russell indices, making the FTSE index ecosystem one of the most widely tracked systems for international investment worldwide, she noted.

Vietnam's upgrade is not only a recognition of the progress made but also an important step to further enhance Vietnam's presence in the eyes of international investors and facilitate global capital flows to participate more deeply in the market over time, she said, adding that FTSE is particularly encouraged that the first phase of the upgrade implementation process has been successfully completed today, while receiving quite positive feedback from clients and market participants about the transition process.

This is the result of significant efforts, preparations, and coordination between the Ministry of Finance, regulatory agencies, stock exchanges, market infrastructure providers, and the investment community in general. Successfully completing the first step is an important achievement, demonstrating Vietnam's commitment to continue developing and reforming the market.

Looking beyond today's milestone, FTSE Russell is committed to being a long-term partner of Vietnam in the ongoing process of modernizing the capital market, Ms. Fiona Bassett noted.

With extensive operational capabilities, including equity markets, fixed income markets, foreign exchange, sustainable investment, and even the digital sector, FTSE is ready to support market participants across the entire investment ecosystem. FTSE believes that the successful development of a market is not only measured by its classification in indices but also by the strength, depth, and resilience of the entire financial market over time. FTSE fully supports the ambitions of the Vietnamese Government in its vision for 2045 as well as the goal of making Vietnam a developed, high-income economy.

"As Vietnam continues to strengthen its capital market and enhance connections with the global investment community, we believe that Vietnam is well-positioned to play an increasingly important role in the international capital market. FTSE Russell and the London Stock Exchange Group are committed to accompanying Vietnam on this journey, contributing to enhancing Vietnam's presence on the international stage, facilitating long-term investment flows, and contributing to Vietnam's ongoing economic success for decades to come. On behalf of all FTSE Russell and the London Stock Exchange Group, I would like to thank all partners and stakeholders for their cooperation over the past time, and extend my sincerest congratulations to Vietnam on this remarkable achievement. We are honored to attend tonight's event and look forward to continuing to accompany and support Vietnam in the next chapter of its market development journey," Ms. Fiona Bassett emphasized.
