Ho Chi Minh City aims to complete seven metro lines, spanning approximately 355 km by 2035, with a preliminary total investment capital of over $40.21 billion.
By 2045, the city will complete an additional 155 km, bringing the total length to approximately 510 km.
According to a submission from the southern city's People's Committee on the Urban Railway (metro) System Development Project at the recent meeting of the municipal People's Council, Director of the city's Department of Transport Tran Quang Lam stated that compared to the previous project proposal, the city has increased the project scale for the period up to 2035 from 183 km to 355 km.
This shortens the timeline for completing the entire planned 510 km network to 2045, instead of 2060, he said.
The early coverage of the metro network is said to aim to address urban traffic issues and meet the requirements for developing a modern and civilized city in the future.
Based on the objectives, scale, and implementation schedule, the People's Committee has determined that the project preparation must be completed in the 2025-2027 period; the 2027-2028 period will focus on completing compensation, support, resettlement, and handing over land for construction; construction will commence from 2027 and no later than 2028; and the completion of 355 km of urban railway will be achieved by 2035.
