Ho Chi Minh City has announced a plan to gradually relocate all housing situated on and along rivers, canals, and channels within the city.
Under the plan, District 8 will serve as the key area, concentrating resources, addressing obstacles, and providing a model for other localities to study and implement.
As the pilot locality, District 8 will test mechanisms and policies for the relocation project, under which, 14,950 households in the district are slated for relocation. The figure includes 9,440 houses built on land along canals, 3,473 houses located partially over canals, 1,589 others on stilts over water, and 448 apartments in the old Pham The Hien apartment complex.
For resettlement purposes, District 8 will prepare 11,471 apartment units, comprising 9,581 units funded by the state budget and 1,890 units developed by private investors. Additionally, Ho Chi Minh City plans to implement two social housing projects and seven resettlement housing projects, with a total investment of nearly VND14.7 trillion ($568.3 million).
The plan also includes an investment of nearly VND2 trillion ($77.3 million) to upgrade and expand existing roads, including bridges along Pham The Hien and Bong Sao streets.
Furthermore, VND8.2 trillion (over $316.3 million) will be allocated for constructing transport systems along the waterways, building embankments, and implementing six park and green space projects to enhance the landscape and create community living spaces for residents in resettlement areas.
In addition to state funding, District 8 is actively working to attract private investment for housing and transport projects, ensuring the plan's successful implementation.
