Ho Chi Minh City plans to build the Can Gio International Transshipment Port in Can Gio district, capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships with a capacity of 24,000 TEUs, according to local authorities.

Total investment is estimated at $6 billion.

The project consists of seven investment phases from now to 2045. The first phase is expected to begin in 2024 and be operational by 2027.

By 2030, the project is expected to have a total cargo capacity of 4.8 million TEUs, gradually increasing to 16.9 million TEUs when the project operates at full capacity, which is expected in 2047.

The port will be able to accommodate mother ships up to 250,000 DWT or 24,000 TEUs, feeder vessels ranging from 10,000 to 65,000 DWT, and barges up to 8,000 tons.

The city recently held a seminar to gather opinions from experts, scientists, professional associations, ministries, departments, and cities and provinces on the project.

It is expected to enhance the competitive advantage of the southern region and boost FDI attraction.

Located in the Thi Vai maritime channel, Can Gio has deep water, is not seriously affected by waves or winds, and is ideal for international container transshipment.
