Ho Chi Minh City plans to develop urban areas around metro lines and Ring Road No. 3 under the transit-oriented development (TOD) planning model, according to the municipal Department of Transport.
The TOD model develops public transportation systems as a planning base for urban and traffic development to form population concentration points.
The model would maximize the utilization of land and space around metro stations and enhance the value of those areas.
It would also provide low-cost public transport and convenient transport for residents. Integrated urban functions would create pedestrian-friendly streets, improving the health of citizens and reducing car use and traffic congestion.
The city plans to pilot the model in areas surrounding stations on Metro Line No. 1 and intersections along Ring Road No. 3.
It will then be expanded to other areas, including Metro Line No. 2.
The department is collecting opinions from relevant agencies and experts on TOD planning, with a proposal to be submitted to the municipal People’s Committee for approval later this year.
