An emergency relief package worth $124,096, provided by the Government of Japan to help Vietnam overcome the consequences of typhoon Yagi, arrived at Noi Bai international airport in Hanoi on September 15, according to a report from the Government News.

Mr. Vu Xuan Thanh, Deputy director of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), received the aid from the Embassy of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) upon its arrival at the airport.

The relief package that includes 40 water purifiers and 200 multi-purpose plastic tarpaulins, among others, was transferred to the northern province of Yen Bai on the same day to help people affected by the typhoon.

Mr. Sugano Yuichi, JICA Chief Representative in Vietnam, was quoted by the Government News as saying:  "We have managed to hand over the emergency aid with the hope of being able to deliver it to the affected people as soon as possible."

According to the reports from the Standing Office of National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control – Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA), Yen Bai province is one of the localities hardest hit by Yagi.

Yagi was the most powerful storm ever recorded to strike Vietnam’s mainland over the last 70 years.

In his message, Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio offered encouragement to storm victims, expressing his hope that the affected localities would soon weather difficulties and restore production. He emphasized that the Japanese Government always accompanies and is ready to support Vietnam to tackle the typhoon's aftermath.

So far, MARD received support from ten embassies and 16 international organizations with a commitment to supply 160 tons of goods by air.

From September 11 - 14, the MARD received one aid shipment from the Australian Government and three shipments from the ASEAN Regional Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management and then transferred to Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces.
