Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son has signed Prime Ministerial Decision No. 1682/QD-TTg, dated December 28, 2024, approving the supplementation and update of the Implementation Plan for the National Power Development Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 (Power Plan VIII).

The decision includes an appendix that supplements and updates the list of power source projects and grid operations up to 2030. Specifically, this includes medium and large-scale hydropower plants such as Dak Mi 1 Hydropower Plant in the Central Highland province of Kon tum, Bac Ai Pumped - Storage Hydropower Plant in the South-Central province of Ninh Thuan , and a flexible power plant in Northern Ninh Binh province.

The largest number of projects added are wind power sources, with a total capacity of more than 8,218 MW in 22 provinces and cities. They include nearshore wind power projects such as Xuyen Moc (phase 2) in Southern Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, Thien Long Ngan Son Wind Power ( in the Northern mountainous province of Bac Kan), VPL Ben Tre Wind Power in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, and Van Canh Binh Dinh Wind Power (in South-Central Binh Dinh province).

For small hydropower projects, these include the Boc Bo Hydropower project (Bac Kan), Song Vo Hydropower (Binh Dinh), Van Hoi Hydropower (Binh Dinh), Ma Thi Ho Hydropower (in Northern Dien Bien province), Nam He Ha Hydropower (Dien Bien), Nam He Thuong 1 Hydropower (Dien Bien), and Giao An II Hydropower (in North-Central Ha Tinh province).

The list of added biomass power projects includes An Giang 1 project (in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang), Nui To I Biomass Power Plant (An Giang), Bac Kan 1 Biomass Power Plant (Bac Kan), and Dong Thap Biomass Power Plant (in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap). The waste-to-energy and power plant (in Northern Bac Giang province), Long My waste-to-energy plant (phase 1, in Binh Dinh), Soc Son waste-to-energy plant (Hanoi), and a pilot battery storage system (in the South-Central province of Khanh Hoa) are also included.

Additionally, many new and expanded transformer substations, along with transmission line projects, are also added to the implementation plan for the Power Plan VIII.
