Mekong Delta localities propose lengthening HCMC - Can Tho high-speed rail project

Leaders of Mekong Delta localities have proposed lengthening the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho high-speed railway, to link the southern economic hub with more Delta provinces and the Cambodian border.

Under the initial plan, the line stretches more than 174 km and passes through six cities and provinces, including southern Binh Duong province, Ho Chi Minh City, and the Mekong Delta’s Long An, Tien Giang, and Vinh Long provinces and Can Tho city.

Total initial investment was estimated at $9 billion.

It is designed to have a speed limit of 200 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for cargo trains.

The project was proposed to be in the public-private partnership (PPP) form.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Transport said it will work to submit the original project to authorized agencies for appraisal and approval before 2025 in order for construction to begin before 2030.
