The Ministry of Transport has kicked off a project to renovate or build ten bridges in the Mekong Delta region with total investment capital of over VND2.15 trillion ($89.5 million).

A ceremony was held in Ben Tre province on January 6 to begin the project.

It will build nine new bridges and upgrade one existing bridge, while also dismantling one old bridge.

The new bridges are the O Mon and Thoi Lai Bridges crossing the O Mon River, the Dong Thuan and Dong Binh Bridges crossing the Thi Doi - O Mon Canal, the Vam Xang - Thi Doi Bridge crossing the Thot Not Canal, the Sa Dec (Nang Hai) Bridge crossing the Lap Vo - Sa Dec Canal, the Moc Hoa Bridge crossing the Vam Co Tay River, the Hong Ngu Bridge crossing the Hong Ngu - Vinh Hung Canal, and the Mo Cay Bridge crossing the Mo Cay Canal.

The project will also renovate and raise the navigational clearance height of the existing Giong Gang Bridge crossing the Hong Ngu - Vinh Hung Canal, and dismantle the old Mang Thit Bridge.

It is aimed at improving transport infrastructure in the Mekong Delta and increasing cargo transport capacity between the region and Ho Chi Minh City.
