Navigational channels to be upgraded for larger vessels

Thanh Thủy -

Total funding for dredging and upgrading a number of channels is $75 million.

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has approved a maritime maintenance plan in 2024 with a total budget of over VND1.8 trillion ($75 million) to allow the passage of larger vessels.

A number of navigational channels will be dredged and upgraded to enable them to accommodate giant ships, including the channels in northern Hai Phong city and Rach Gia in the Mekong Delta’s Kien Giang province.

The Vietnam Maritime Administration has been assigned to supervise and report to the MoT on implementation of the plan.

It was also instructed to enhance State management and guide relevant agencies on implementation.

Last October, a joint venture between the Long Hai Ltd. Co and the My Dung Mechanics Ltd. Co secured a contract to dredge a section of the Hai Phong navigational channel, with capital of nearly VND244 billion ($10.1 million).
