Party General Secretary To Lam has instructed south-central Ninh Thuan province to carry out necessary procedures to resume the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant project.

He made the request while visiting the planned site for the construction of the Ninh Thuan 1 Nuclear Power Plant in Vinh Truong hamlet, Phuoc Dinh commune, Thuan Nam district on December 5.

The investment policy of the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project had been approved by the National Assembly (NA) in 2009. Accordingly, the Ninh Thuan 1 Nuclear Power Plant will be located in Thuan Nam district and the Ninh Thuan 2 Nuclear Power Plant in Ninh Hai district, with a combined capacity of 400MW.

However, in November 2016, the NA had decided to stop the aforesaid project due to the country's "economic conditions".

The NA has recently approved the restart of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project following the Government’s proposal to ensure energy security in a new context.
