Phu Quoc water transport project for tourism development approved
Following the recent merger, Phu Quoc island, formerly a city of Kien Giang Province, now stands as one of three special zones of An Giang province.

Chairman of the People's Committee of An Giang Province in Vietnam's Mekong Delta, Mr.  Ho Van Mung, has signed a decision approving a project for managing water transport activities to serve tourism development in the province's Phu Quoc Special Zone (formerly Phu Quoc island district).

The project outlines objectives aimed at developing a synchronous and modern water transport system for tourism, enhancing service quality, meeting socio-economic development demands, and contributing to transforming the Phu Quoc Special Zone into an island urban area, which will become a tourist service hub for domestic and international visitors by 2040.

According to a report from the An Giang Department of Construction, by the end of 2024, the province has had 238 domestic waterway vessels in service of tourist transport, certified by the registration authority as vessel classes VR SB (river-sea phase: a high-standard classification for Vietnamese inland waterway vessels which can operate in both river and sea areas, but not exceeding 12 nautical miles from shore), VR SI (limited river-sea phase: operating in waters with maximum wave height of 2m, equivalent to wind force 8), and VRH HSC SB, VRH HSC SI (high-speed vessels operating in restricted areas, etc.), with capacities ranging from over 12 to 70 passengers, and main engine power from 35 to 1,000 horsepower.

Under Prime Ministerial Decision No. 150/QD-TTg, dated February 6, 2024, the master plan for development of Phu Quoc island was approved, which aims to develop Phu Quoc into a high-quality, distinctive, and attractive tourism and resort service center; a commercial, service, and high-tech healthcare and convalescence center of regional and international stature; a political-cultural center; a quality and connected living space for island residents; and an urban area of green, smart, and energy-saving growth, adaptable to climate change, creating resources for sustainable development.

Following the  establishment of the new province of An Giang, as a result of  the merger of the former provinces of Kien Giang and An Giang on July 1, 2025, Phu Quoc City has become a special zone, along with two others, namely Kien Hai and Tho Chu).
